Dieffenbachia is a beautiful, evergreen, tropical plant, having very simple, large leaves with interesting white spots and flecks of different colors – from light green to dark yellow. Its stem is straight and thick. Dieffenbachia’s tolerance of shade makes it a popular houseplant.

It’s also chosen by many gardeners around the world for its ability to create warm and joyous atmosphere in every room.

Dieffenbachia received its name in fame of the head gardener of the Botanical Garden in Vienna, Joseph Dieffenbach. Another name of this plant is «dumb cane». This name was given to Dieffenbachia due to the fact that this plant contains raphides, the crystals, causing temporary numbing, if ingested. Therefore, if you have Dieffenbachia in your collection of plants, you should be very attentive to small children and pets, living in your apartment. Even though intoxication with Dieffenbachia’s sap may hardly lead to a grave or fatal outcome; it’s not pleasant and may be even frightening to face the consequences of it.

Having this small disadvantage, Dieffenbachia is also well-known for its strong points among which are outstanding abilities in dust removal, air-cleaning and sanitizing. Not everyone knows that houseplants have their own immune protection, so-called microbicidal properties. Dieffenbachia is no exception. It contains phytoncides, which are functional in cleaning the air from pathogens, the microorganisms causing many people’s diseases. Moreover, Dieffenbachia adds humidity to the room. This plant is highly recommended to people who take good care of their health and want to keep clean air in their house or any other facility, where they spend a lot of time.

  • Dieffenbachia plants

STEP 1/8

Remove plastic wrap from the cartridges. Santino cartridge is a unique product, which perfectly adjusts the level of moisture.

STEP 2/8

Install the cartridges into the inner pot.

STEP 3/8

Pour the first layer of soil into inner pot, which shouldn’t be much since you need to leave enough space for the root ball. This plant prefers well draining soil.

STEP 4/8

Place the plants directly into the flower pot and fill the remaining space with soil. Don’t forget to wear protective gloves. In case Dieffenbachia’s sap gets on your skin, it may cause burning and itching sensation.

STEP 5/8

Slightly compress. Don’t be too hard, as your plant needs the air, contained in the soil. Make sure the growing point is not covered with soil.

STEP 6/8

Add a little bit more soil, because it will settle within 2-3 weeks by 5-10%. This happens, because the soil loses some air, when you water it.

STEP 7/8

Water Dieffenbachia directly into the soil.

Later you can water your plant through the spout element on the side of the pot. Remember, that you should keep Dieffenbachia’s soil moist (not wet).

STEP 8/8

Keep an eye on your plant – the water-level window will help you to understand, when it is time to water your plant.

LIGHT

As it was mentioned before, Dieffenbachia tolerates shadowy places. However, it grows better, receiving medium amount of qualitative light. Direct sun is dangerous for this plant and may burn its beautiful leaves.

TEMPERATURE

Dieffenbachia plant used to warm climate conditions. Therefore, the temperature in the facility, where it grows, shouldn’t get lower than 17-18°C. Too high temperatures (25°C and over) and bright light may also make your plant sickly and weak.

WATERING

Dieffenbachia requires moderate watering. Don’t keep the soil in its pot wet. The soil should be moist at all times. It’s highly recommended to remove dust from its leaves using smooth piece of cloth at least once a week. After that you may sprinkle the plant with water. During the winter months you may reduce watering of your Dieffenbachia.

FEEDING

Feed Dieffenbachia with complete liquid food on a semi-monthly basis during active growing period, which is from March till October. No feeding is required during the winter period.

Take good care of Dieffenbachia and it’ll take the same care of you!
